The spirit of
the house

Behind every great English house there is a cellar, and behind every good cellar, a story worth telling at the table.

The Sopwith cellar is kept in the manner of a private wine merchant: unhurried, exacting, quietly proud. Here the rituals of British celebration are properly observed: the cork drawn as the guests arrive, the glass raised to absent friends, the single malt poured for the last hour of the evening, when the story is finally told in full. English sparkling for the wedding morning; a London dry gin for the first warm evening of the year.

It is a cellar of unusual range. English sparkling and still wines sit beside gin, whisky, rum, vodka and brandy; liqueurs and aperitifs beside a properly kept beer. From here follow collectors’ editions and hotel pours, airport exclusives and celebration gifting, a breadth few names could carry, and Sopwith carries lightly.

The name belongs among bottles because precision is the family trade. The house that built the most celebrated aircraft of its age understood balance, patience and the worth of doing one thing beautifully: the same virtues every distiller and winemaker lives by. For the maker or merchant who takes the Cellar, the hardest part of a premium label, its story, arrives already written.

Diageo's 2020 acquisition of Aviation American Gin

In 2020, Diageo acquired Aviation American Gin, the brand fronted by Ryan Reynolds, in a deal worth up to $610 million: an initial $335 million, plus up to $275 million on performance.

Aviation had a brilliant name and a brilliant storyteller. What it never had was aviation. No aircraft. No aces. No century of flight. The name was borrowed from a cocktail. In 2026, Diageo quietly closed its Portland distillery, the one piece of real-world place the brand had.

A borrowed word was worth up to $610 million.
Sopwith is the word, with a real aviation house behind it.

The Licensing Opportunity

The Cellar, under
exclusive licence

Offered whole, or by category: English sparkling to single malt.

Sopwith supplies the heritage, the identity, the registered rights across wines, spirits and beer, the storytelling and the approvals. The partner develops, produces and commercialises: an exclusive range under a name with a century already behind it. The distiller distils, the winemaker makes the wine; the house makes it Sopwith.
